Govind Nagar Beach runs along the northern part of Havelock Island, close to the jetty where government and private ferries dock. The beach is named after Govind Nagar village, the settlement that developed around the island's main entry point. Most of the hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, and shops in the Beach No. 1 area are within a short walk of this beach.

The beach is wider than it looks from the road. The sand is pale and soft in places, with a gradual slope into calm, shallow water. Because the bay here is partially sheltered, the waves are small and the sea stays relatively flat even when conditions at the western beaches are rougher. This makes it one of the safer spots on the island for children or anyone not confident in open water.

Fishing boats are moored along part of the beach, and the mornings here have a working character that is different from anywhere else on Havelock Island. Nets are laid out to dry, boats come and go, and the catch from the previous night is sorted and sold. It is not staged for visitors. It is just what happens here every day.

Govind Nagar is one of the older settlements on Havelock Island. The village grew up around the jetty area as the island was opened to civilian settlement in the decades following Indian independence. Settlers, many of them Bengali families relocated from East Pakistan during the partition period, were assigned land in different parts of the island, and Govind Nagar became the administrative and commercial center by virtue of its position at the main entry point.

The beach in front of the village has been used by the fishing community for generations. Before tourism came to Havelock Island, this was the beach that mattered, the one where boats launched and returned, where fish were landed and traded. That function has not changed even as Radhanagar and Elephant Beach became internationally known.

The numbered beach system, which designates this stretch as Beach No. 1, was applied by the government to bring some order to how Havelock Island's coastline was identified and managed. The number has stuck and is still used on road signs, in auto-rickshaw directions, and in hotel addresses across the island.

For most visitors, Govind Nagar Beach is either the first thing they see when they arrive on Havelock Island or the last thing before they leave. It doesn't compete with the island's more famous beaches. It is just there, doing what it has always done.

Most visitors pass through Govind Nagar Beach twice, once when they arrive and once when they leave, without realising the beach is right there. It is less than a kilometer from the jetty, which means if your ferry arrives in the morning and your hotel check-in is later, the beach is a straightforward place to drop your bag and spend an hour.

The same applies on departure day. If your ferry leaves in the afternoon, there is not always enough time to go back to Radhanagar and return without rushing. Govind Nagar Beach gives you a beach option within walking distance of the jetty, no vehicle required.

The area around the beach has the island's highest concentration of hotels, restaurants, and shops. Everything from the local market to the main auto-rickshaw stand is within a few minutes of the beach. If you are new to the island, this is the easiest place to get your bearings before heading out to the more distant beaches.

There are no facilities on the beach itself, no changing rooms, no showers, no food stalls directly on the sand. The restaurants and shops along the main road are a short walk away and cover everything you need.

Tips for Visiting Govind Nagar Beach

• Go early morning if you want to see the fishing activity. By 9 AM most of the boats are back out and the beach quietens down considerably.
• Do not expect the water clarity of Radhanagar or Kalapathar. The bay near the jetty sees more boat traffic, which affects visibility. It is a calm beach, not a snorkeling beach.
• Use this beach on your arrival or departure day when time is limited. There is no point spending a full day here if Radhanagar and Elephant Beach are both on your list.
• The beach is walkable from most Beach No. 1 accommodation. No vehicle needed, which makes it useful for an evening stroll or an early morning visit without planning.
• Be respectful of the fishing activity. The boats and nets are working equipment, not props. Keep a reasonable distance from the moored boats and the areas where nets are being handled.
• As with all Andaman beaches, avoid the monsoon months (June to September) for any water activity. The sea gets rough island-wide and even the sheltered bay here can be choppy.
