If you're in Port Blair this week or landing in the next few days, there's a local event worth building your evenings around. The Andaman & Nicobar Tourism Department is running the second edition of its Monsoon Food & Culture Festival from July 17 to 19 at ITF Ground in Sri Vijaya Puram, gates open at 4 pm each day. It's not a beach event or a water sports thing, it's the administration's answer to the question of what to do here when the sea is too rough for diving and snorkelling.
The first edition ran from June 26 to 28 as MonsoonFlavours 2026 and drew a solid crowd of local food vendors, self-help groups, and artisans, enough that the department decided to run it again a few weeks later under the #MonsoonMagic2026 banner. Expect stalls from hoteliers, restaurant owners, and home chefs selling island seafood, organic produce, and traditional recipes, alongside handicrafts and eco-friendly products from local self-help groups. There's a cultural side too, live music, dance, and poetry recitations from volunteer performers, plus informal contests like arm wrestling and chess with prizes for winners.
Gates open at 4 pm on all three days, not earlier. If you're coming straight from a Cellular Jail or Corbyn's Cove visit, plan your afternoon around that, arriving before 4 just means standing outside the ITF Ground.
July is the low point of the tourist year here, resorts run at a fraction of their usual occupancy because the southwest monsoon makes ferries unreliable and underwater visibility poor. Rather than let the month go quiet, the tourism department has been scheduling a run of these monsoon-themed events, a beach volleyball tournament and reel-making contest in June, this food and culture festival now, framing the rain as part of the experience instead of a reason to stay home. It's a deliberate push, and one that's turned into a small but growing calendar of its own.
Since the festival only opens at 4 pm, it slots in naturally after a full day of Cellular Jail and its light and sound show, or a museum stop at Samudrika or the Anthropological Museum. ITF Ground isn't far from Corbyn's Cove or Aberdeen Bazaar, so if you're staying near either you can walk over. If you're travelling with family, this is a far easier evening than trying to time a beach visit around monsoon squalls, everything here is under cover or close enough to shelter to dodge a passing shower.
Not on its own, three evenings of food stalls and cultural programmes isn't a reason to book flights. But if you're already visiting Port Blair in this window for other reasons, or you're weighing whether a July trip is worth it at all, this is the kind of thing that tips it in favour of going. Lower crowds, lower hotel rates, and now an actual event to fill an evening that would otherwise be spent waiting out the rain.
