Most travelers get to Elephant Beach on Swaraj Dweep (Havelock Island) by boarding a noisy, crowded sharing speedboat from the main jetty. But if you want to skip the commercial boat lines and experience the island’s authentic topography, there is a better way. A 2-kilometer eco-trail cuts directly through pristine tropical rainforest and old-growth mangrove patches, letting you earn your beach day on foot.
The trek takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes each way, depending on your pace. The first half of the trail is sheltered under an immense canopy of towering Padauk and Gurjan trees. Sunlight filters through the leaves in sharp, dramatic beams, making it an excellent route for birdwatching and photography. Because it's peak season, the ground is hard, dry, and clean, providing excellent traction underfoot.
The trail entrance is a subtle clearing on the side of the road, roughly 8.5 km from the Havelock jetty. Look for the forest department logbook station where you will need to register and team up with a certified local guide before heading in.
As you draw closer to the coast, the forest gives way to a coastal marsh ecosystem. Here, the trail snakes through a marshy mangrove patch via a network of giant, exposed interlocking roots. The forest department has laid down simple bamboo and wooden steps over the softest patches to keep your feet dry. Navigating this section feels like a genuine wilderness trek before the landscape opens up completely to the sea.
The moment you step out of the treeline, you are greeted by Elephant Beach's famous white sands and dead-tree shoreline silhouettes. Because the speedboats arrive on the far eastern side of the beach, the trek path actually deposits you on the quieter, western end of the bay. You get a few quiet moments to appreciate the turquoise water before walking down the shore to join the water sports, snorkeling, or glass-bottom boat tours.
The trail is open from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM daily, and you aren't permitted to head back into the forest after 3:00 PM for safety reasons. Wear breathable activewear and lightweight trail shoes or sturdy sports sneakers. Make sure to carry a full bottle of water, as there are absolutely no stalls along the jungle path. Once you reach the main beach hub, you can easily buy snacks, fresh coconut water, or rent snorkeling gear.
