Where Andaman Still Feels Truly Undiscovered

Long Island is more than just a name on a map. It is the kind of place that makes you feel like you have stepped back in time. As one of the least visited inhabited islands in the Andaman archipelago, Long Island carries an untouched charm, dense tropical forests, and a pace of life that has not changed in decades. From the breathtaking Lalaji Bay Beach (a pristine white sand stretch accessible only by trek or boat) to the sandbar at Guitar Island, from the clear snorkeling waters of Merk Bay to the mangrove-fringed creeks, Long Island rewards travelers who are willing to plan ahead and leave the crowds behind.

About Long Island - More Than Just a Remote Stopover

Long Island is the hidden gem of Middle Andaman and the reason many offbeat travelers say this is what the Andamans used to feel like. Located 80 kilometers north of Port Blair by sea, it is an island that feels raw, honest, and wonderfully disconnected from the rest of the world.

The island sits at a unique intersection of dense tropical forest, mangrove creeks, and secluded coastline. It is where you trek through the jungle for an hour to reach a beach you might have all to yourself, where no motorized vehicles disturb the silence, where a small village of less than a thousand people lives alongside coconut plantations and boat-building yards, and where the only sounds are birds, waves, and the occasional cow wandering past your path. Walking through the village paths of Long Island you see children heading to school, fishermen mending their nets, and the kind of everyday island life that most tourists never experience.

Long Island is also the slow travel and eco-adventure capital of Middle Andaman. The jetty, the start of the Lalaji Bay trek, the only dive center on the island, and a handful of basic eco-huts and homestays are all clustered near the village. For travelers this means Long Island is not a place for luxury or convenience. It is where you carry cash because there is no ATM, where you walk everywhere because there are no roads for cars, and where you trade Instagram-worthy resorts for genuine solitude.

Most travelers spend 2 to 3 nights on Long Island during their Andaman trip. Those who make the journey almost always say it was the most authentic part of their entire holiday.

Lalaji Bay Beach

Every step of the jungle trek, every wave, and every grain of white sand here is worth it. Lalaji Bay is Long Island's crown jewel, a stunning stretch of pristine beach accessible only by a 1.5-hour forest trek or a hired boat through mangrove creeks. No shops, no crowds, no noise.

Merk Bay (North Passage Island)

Merk Bay is what many travelers call the best snorkeling spot in Middle Andaman. Powdery white sand, gentle turquoise water, and healthy coral reefs close to shore. A day trip from Long Island by local boat, and often combined with Guitar Island on the same excursion.

Best Time to Visit Long Island

Long Island is at its absolute best from November to April. This period offers calm seas for boat trips to Merk Bay and Guitar Island, clear visibility for snorkeling, and pleasant weather for the Lalaji Bay jungle trek. December to February is peak season when the weather is most comfortable and the sea is flat. March to April offers equally good conditions with slightly fewer visitors. October and early May can work but expect occasional showers. June to September brings the southwest monsoon, rough seas, frequent boat cancellations, leeches on the forest trail, and most water activities shutting down completely. Avoid if possible.

Getting to Long Island

Getting to Long Island takes planning, but that is exactly what keeps it special. The journey requires patience, but most travelers agree the destination makes up for the effort.

At AndamanVacation.com our dedicated transport partners help you navigate the two main routes to Long Island. The most reliable option is to take a bus or private cab from Port Blair to Rangat (6 to 8 hours via the Andaman Trunk Road), then catch a government ferry or local boat from Rangat's Yerrata Jetty to Long Island (about 1 to 1.5 hours). Government ferries from Port Blair to Long Island run only 2 to 3 times per week, so the Rangat route is usually easier. Our local partners know the ferry schedules, the reliable boat operators, and the small details that make the difference between a smooth journey and a frustrating one.

Every Long Island itinerary we plan includes clear guidance on ferry bookings, backup options, and what to expect on the journey. You focus on Lalaji Bay and the sandbar. We handle the logistics.

Travel Tips for Long Island

Long Island rewards travelers who come prepared. Here are the most important things to know before and during your stay on this remote island.

  • Carry enough cash before you arrive. There is no ATM on Long Island. None. Every homestay, shop, and boat operator runs on cash only. Stock up in Port Blair or Rangat before you make the trip.
  • The trek to Lalaji Bay takes about 1.5 hours each way through the forest. Wear proper shoes, no flip-flops. Carry at least two liters of water per person, plus snacks and insect repellent. Start early, before 8 AM, to avoid the afternoon heat.
  • There are no motorized vehicles on Long Island. No cars, no scooters, nothing with an engine. You walk everywhere. Pack light because you will be carrying your luggage from the jetty to your stay.
  • Mobile network is patchy at best. BSNL works in some spots near the jetty. Jio and Airtel are unreliable. Do not plan on having internet. Download your maps and entertainment before you leave Port Blair.
  • For the Merk Bay and Guitar Island boat trips, check the weather and sea conditions the day before. These trips are completely dependent on calm seas. Book through your stay or at the jetty, and be prepared to change plans if the weather turns.
